There are many different causes of infertility that affect men and women. In fact, it’s estimated that one-third of infertility cases is the result of male infertility, one-third the result of female infertility, and one-third the result of male and female infertility. Thankfully our Los Angeles, CA fertility doctors can tailor treatments to your needs, and help you experience the joys of pregnancy.

Dr. Marc Kalan and Dr. Nurit Winkler would like to go over some of the most common reasons for female infertility. This should give you an idea of what to expect. We can give you more information on treatment options when you visit Los Angeles Reproductive Center for a consultation.

Advanced Age

As women get older (particularly over the age of 40), the chances of getting pregnant become lower. There is also an increased risk in pregnancy loss and birth defects. This is why many women attempt to start families before the age of 35.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. PCOS results in irregular periods, which may last too long and/or occur too infrequently. Women with PCOS often have higher levels of androgen in their system, which leads to excessive facial hair or body hair.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis involves tissue that usually forms on the inside of the uterus developing on the outside of the uterus. When this happens, the tissue builds up and breaks down during a woman’s cycle. Since this tissue isn’t able to leave the body, it accumulates around the reproductive organs, potentially causing scar tissue, adhesions, and cysts that can result in infertility.

Fallopian Tube Problems

When the fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, this can make it difficult for sperm to reach a waiting egg and fertilize it. Similarly, a fertilized egg may not be able to travel to the uterus to full develop. These fallopian tube problems may be caused by injury, illness, and even genetic factors.

Uterine and Cervical Problems

When a woman suffers from issues with their uterus or cervix, these can both lead to problems with fertility.

Some examples of uterine problems include tumors or cysts in the uterus or irregular uterus shape. These issues make it difficult for sperm to reach an egg, and for an egg to implant and develop following fertilization.

Some examples of cervix problems include thick cervical mucus and narrowing of the cervix (cervical stenosis). Both of these issues make it difficult for sperm to get past the cervix and fertilize an egg.

Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (Early Menopause)

While primary ovarian insufficiency is not technically a form of menopause, its effect on female fertility is the same as the onset of menopause. Generally this means that a woman becomes infertile before the age of 40.

Unexplained Female Infertility

Sometimes a woman seems otherwise healthy and simply suffers from unexplained infertility. These cases can be extremely frustrating for women to deal with, which is why our team takes great care in developing the right fertility treatment options for these kinds of situations.
