IUI Success Rates
Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a common fertility treatment. This minimally invasive technique is often the first line of treatment for many male and female fertility issues. During IUI treatment, washed sperm is injected into a woman’s uterus at the appropriate time of her menstrual cycle.
Intrauterine insemination is an ideal fertility treatment for many of our patients at the Los Angeles Reproductive Center. Many patients considering this treatment want to know the exact rate of success for this technique. IUI success rates vary among our Encino, CA, Bakersfield, CA, and Los Angeles, CA patients. Here we discuss the average rate of IUI success, and the factors that can affect treatment outcome.
Range of IUI Success Rates
It would be great if we could let our patients know exactly how likely it is that IUI treatment will be a success for them. However, IUI success rates are impacted by a number of different factors, which makes it difficult to determine a specific success rate. Even if patients look at studies regarding IUI treatment, they will find that different studies report different rates of success.
Given the many factors that can affect IUI treatment, the best we can do is provide patients with a range of treatment success rates. Average IUI success rates fall between five and 15 percent. Under ideal conditions, IUI success rates can be as high as 20 percent. These numbers may not sound very promising, but a healthy woman who is free of fertility issues has about a 25 percent chance of conceiving naturally each cycle, so IUI success rates are actually very promising.
What Affects IUI Success?
IUI success rates can vary based on a number of different factors. Some of the conditions that have the greatest impact on the success of IUI treatment include:
- Patient’s age
- Male and/or female infertility issues that are present
- Quantity and quality of eggs in the female’s ovarian reserve
- Whether ovarian stimulation is performed prior to IUI
- Whether fresh or frozen sperm is used in treatment
- Number of IUI cycles performed
Taking all these factors into consideration, our fertility specialists can let patients know if they are ideal candidates for IUI, and, if so, customize a treatment plan that is most likely to be a success.
What Can I Do to Improve IUI Success Rates?
Many of the factors that affect IUI success are out of a patient’s control. Still, there are steps that an individual can take to improve their overall health and promote the success of IUI treatment.
- Seek treatment for any pre-existing medical conditions that can impact fertility or cause inflammation
- Consider taking supplements or vitamins to enhance ovarian health
- Eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet
- Stay physically active, but avoid high intensity exercises prior to IUI treatment
- Try to reduce stress
