Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the most common forms of artificial insemination. During the IUI procedure, a catheter is used so that sperm can be injected into the uterus. This increases the chances of successful fertilization.
As with IVF, donor sperm is used as part of the fertilization process. Patients can select their donor based on various criteria.
Egg Donors
If a single woman is unable to provide viable eggs of her own, she can use donor eggs in order to have a child. These donor eggs come from healthy, fertile young women. The donor eggs will be used as part of an IVF procedure, with the resulting embryo transferred to the patient’s uterus.
Surrogacy
If a single woman is unable to carry a child to term on her own, she may pick a gestational surrogate. A gestational surrogate is a woman who carries a child to term for another couple or individual. An IVF procedure is performed to transfer the embryo to the surrogate.
Surrogacy is an ideal option if there is a risk of pregnancy loss or other adverse health effects.
