Semen Analysis

Are you and your partner struggling to get pregnant? Determining the cause of infertility is the first step toward starting your family.

A semen analysis can detect abnormalities that could be preventing you from conceiving.

Drs. Marc Kalan and Nurit Winkler can perform a semen analysis at their Bakersfield and Encino, CA, offices to identify abnormalities.

The Factors A Semen Analysis Considers

During a semen analysis at Los Angeles Reproductive Center, your sperm is examined to review several factors that could be causing fertility issues.

Volume

The volume of your ejaculate, or the amount of liquid released during ejaculation, will be reviewed. An adequate volume of semen is necessary to transfer sperm into the female reproductive tract.

Count

An analysis examines the quantity of sperm in the ejaculate fluid, or sperm concentration. Sperm count is measured by the number of sperm per millimeter of fluid. A low sperm count decreases your chances of sperm making it to the egg for fertilization.

Motility

Sperm motility refers to the percentage of sperm that move and how well those sperm propel themselves. Sperm need to be able to propel themselves through the female reproductive tract to reach the egg.

Morphology

Sperm morphology refers to the size and shape of the sperm's head. Once a healthy sperm reaches an egg, the head dissolves, which fertilizes that egg. Poor sperm morphology affects the sperm's ability to dissolve and fertilize.

Sperm Morphology Can Affect Male Fertility

A sperm analysis is often the key to determining if male-factor infertility is keeping hopeful parents from growing their families. Good sperm morphology allows the sperm to properly dissolve and fertilize their partner's egg.

When Would I Need a Semen Analysis?

If you have been trying to become pregnant for over a year without success, or if a female partner is over the age of 35, both you and your partner should be tested for possible infertility problems. Semen analysis can quickly and effectively determine any male infertility issues. Further testing will be needed if the results come back normal.

You Are Not Alone

We understand that fertility issues can seem overwhelming and even isolating. However, you are not alone. Male factor infertility is on the rise. Researchers have discovered that sperm count is declining in men in North America, Europe, and Australia. In fact, sperm counts have decreased in Western countries by as much as 59% since 1973. A decline in sperm volume was also noted during this study.

Common Causes of Male Infertility Sperm and Semen Issues

There are several sperm and semen issues that can affect your ability to conceive. By examining your semen, we can get to the underlying cause of fertility issues and are better able to recommend treatment.

Common issues that can lead to semen problems and infertility include:

  • Varicocele
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Elevated temperature around the testicles
  • Tubal blockages
  • Infections
  • Anti-sperm antibodies
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Medication side effects
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • Stress
"Both doctors we saw and all the staff were very professional, lovely to interact with and we felt like they cared for us during the whole process.  We were luckily to find such a wonderful clinic and blessed with two beautiful children. Thank you so much." Andrew Hewett

Targeted Treatment After Receiving Your Results

Once a sample of your semen is examined for sperm count, motility, volume, and morphology, one of our fertility specialists can recommend proper treatment. Depending on the results of your semen analysis, our doctors may recommend:

Lifestyle Changes

Leading a healthy lifestyle with proper exercise and diet can help prevent issues like obesity, which can lead to semen and infertility problems.

Surgery

If you have a blockage, such as an obstruction in the vas deferens, our doctors may need to perform a surgical procedure to remove the obstruction.

Sperm Retrieval

In some cases, we may recommend retrieving sperm from the testes or the epididymis for use with in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination.

Our doctors will work with you and your partner to determine the best course of treatment to help grow your family.

I've Had a Vasectomy Reversal How Will That Affect My Fertility?

/

A vasectomy reversal does not guarantee male fertility. It could take 3-6 months for your sperm count to reach normal levels after reversal. Pregnancy rates after a vasectomy reversal can range from 30-90%.

Why Choose Our Professional Testing? Our Advanced Technology Matters

While over-the-counter semen testing kits are available, they do not give as thorough or accurate results. You want the best possible care when building your family. Contact our Bakersfield, CA, or Encino, CA, offices if you are looking for the most precise results possible.

Thorough Tests
