Artificial Insemination: Conservative, Effective Fertility Treatment
Artificial insemination is a recommended treatment option for certain patients who are struggling to conceive. The trusted procedure provides the ability to overcome fertility challenges such as low sperm count or motility. It is also a solution for LGBTQ families. At Los Angeles Reproductive Center in Los Angeles, CA, Drs. Marc Kalan and Nurit Winkler are dedicated to offering our patients the compassionate support and advanced care needed to build their families.
About Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination is a fertility treatment in which sperm is delivered directly into a woman’s uterus. The woman's menstrual cycle is closely monitored during treatment using ultrasounds, blood tests, ovulation kits, and other diagnostic tools. Before being injected, the semen is washed and concentrated in a lab. This process helps to increase the chances for fertilization.
Traditionally, patients will undergo one to three cycles of IUI before trying other treatment options. IUI is commonly combined with other fertility medications to increase the success rate.
IUI provides the ability to overcome fertility challenges such as low sperm count or motility.
When Is Artificial Insemination Recommended?
Artificial insemination can be quite successful for some couples. This treatment may be recommended when:
- Moderately low sperm count or motility
- Donor sperm is preferred
- An LGBTQ couple desires to have a child using donated sperm
- Unexplained infertility
Like any medical procedure, there are factors that affect the overall success of treatment including age, medical history, sperm quality, and more.
Types of Artificial Insemination
There are two primary types of artificial insemination:
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): This type of artificial insemination involves delivering the prepared sperm past the cervix, directly into the uterus.
- Intracervical Insemination (ICI): This option involves depositing the sperm into the cervix. ICI is an out-dated method of artificial insemination that we do not recommend due to it's lower success rate.
These procedures can be performed with or without the aid of fertility drugs.
When Should Patients Consider In Vitro Fertilization?
If artificial insemination is not successful after three cycles, an alternative fertility option may need to be considered. In these cases, your doctor may suggest in vitro fertilization (IVF), a common treatment that involves combining the eggs and sperm in a laboratory to create an embryo.
