Ovulation Induction: Treatment for Female Infertility
In some cases of female infertility, ovulation induction can help to achieve pregnancy. This treatment stimulates egg development and release with the use of hormonal therapy or fertility drugs. Our world-class fertility clinic in Los Angeles, CA strives to deliver high-quality treatment with warmth, compassion, and understanding. Drs. Nurit Winkler and Marc Kalan are double board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology and reproduction endocrinology & infertility.
About Ovulation Induction
Our doctors at Los Angeles Reproductive Center can induce ovulation with hormone injections or oral fertility drugs such as letrozole or clomiphene citrate. Typically, the first recommended treatment is oral medications, since they have fewer side effects. This form of treatment is also generally more affordable, requires less monitoring, and reduces the risk of multiple pregnancies. If the patient does not have success with oral medications alone, our fertility team may recommend injectable gonadotropins. In some cases, gonadotropins or clomiphene may be used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Exploring Candidacy
Ovulation induction is an option for women with anovulation or oligo-ovulation – conditions which prevent the regular release of mature eggs. Therefore, women who wish to become pregnant but ovulate infrequently or not at all are often excellent candidates for this treatment.
When women are not producing eggs, it could indicate premature ovarian failure, PCOS, or another issue. Detecting the underlying cause of infertility can increase your chances of becoming pregnant. To determine your eligibility for ovulation induction, your doctor will perform a comprehensive examination.
How Treatment Works
When undergoing ovulation induction, patients will administer an injection or take oral medication once per day, usually in the evenings. As you advance through treatment, Dr. Winkler or Dr. Kalan will perform pelvic ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor your progress. This allows us to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies and adjust your dosage for optimal results.
Fertility Drugs
Patients using this type of ovulation induction should be aware that, if successful, it could take several cycles before pregnancy occurs. However, due to the conservative nature of this procedure, many of our patients prefer to try this method before pursuing other options.
Hormone Therapy
If hormone injection therapy is chosen, patients will administer gonadotropins injections to regulate the menstrual cycle. Our doctors will take all the time necessary to teach you exactly how and where to perform the injections. Those who ovulate infrequently or irregularly can increase the probability of conception by encouraging consistent and stable egg release using this method.
